Risk-based decision making.
ISTR is delighted to invite members and friends to the capital city of Scotland for our AGM and Summer Symposium at the splendid Playfair Library Hall, Old College, University of Edinburgh. This is the perfect opportunity to catch up with old friends, make new ones and hear some outstanding speakers discuss their experiences and share solutions.
Our morning begins with speakers sharing their experience of practical risk-based decision making. We start by looking at how to manage risks across different disciplines, with examples from widely contrasting subjects. Our focus then goes the biomedical teaching laboratories where we will learn about the challenges of making reasonable adjustments to accommodate individual students with disabilities or health issues while keeping them safe.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service follow and by sharing their approach to their work, the risk-based decisions required and how our decisions impact on theirs when we require their assistance in the workplace. The morning concludes as we learn what influences the decisions made by insurers when they calculate their premiums - could this give an insight into how to reduce yours?
The afternoon starts with he EC sharing how members can get the most from our new website. We then turn our attention to people, why they act in the way they do,? What influences their decision making, why do they take risks? A Human Factors specialist and experienced incident investigator will explores individual bias, human errors, and deliberate behaviours. The session also includes an opportunity to work as groups as we discover how to identify activities which require close attention in order to reduce the likelihood of human failure.
The busy programme will conclude with our ever popular Discussion Forum (where we have another opportunity to learn from and share with each other). It promises to be a topical, informative and practical day!
Our AGM and Symposium Dinner will be held on Monday 25th June, also in the splendid surroundings of the Playfair Library, featuring William Playfair's signature neoclassical barrel-vaulted ceiling. The event kicks off with an opportunity to explore Scotland’s historic capital city with a ‘hop on hop off’ bus tour enabling you to explore the city and visit different sites as you go. We look forward to welcoming you to Edinburgh.

Accommodation
Accommodation is NOT INCLUDED in the cost of the Symposium this year.
We recommend delegates book into overnight B&B accommodation available in the University's nearby Pollock Halls, (Postcode EH8 5AY). Charges are £35/night (competitive rates are available) and it is approximately 1.1 miles from the Playfair Library, Old College and readily accessible on foot or via the local bus.
As the programme starts on a Monday why not come and spend the weekend before in Edinburgh!

Air - Edinburgh is accessible from a number of airports
Rail/Bus - The nearest railway station to the Playfair Library, Old College, University is Edinburgh Waverley, Edinburgh's main rail station, 20 minutes walk away.
Road - Parking is very limited and travel by car should be avoided unless essential.
